The Katakwi Magistrate’s Court has summoned the former Katakwi District LCV Walter Elakas Okiring, Joseph Akol Former District Land Board chairman and Charles Akol over assault. Elakas is being accused of assaulting Charles Robert Opus, a resident of Abela village, Getom sub-county in Katakwi District at Akello restaurant in Katakwi on February 10, 2018 over a land dispute. A row has emerged between Muslim community of Katakwi district and the authorities of Katakwi town council over the cemetery land. The land in contention is located along Soroti- Moroto Road opposite Katakwi Town council and its approximately 0.169 hectare. Katakwi district security authorities have said that at least 120 heads of cattle have been lost in Katakwi in the last four months. The Katakwi District Resident District commissioner RDC Katakwi Rtd Maj Godfrey Katamba said that since January to April 2023 over 120 cattle have been stolen by Karamojong but an average of 80 cattle have never been recovered. Police in Usuk, Katakwi district have been accused of soliciting bribes from complainants and suspects. Emmanuel Elungat, Des Okolimo and Rose Atim, all residents of Usuk who testified against the police actions during a community awareness training in Usuk, blamed police for unlawfully asking for money from suspects in order to settle cases.
