A row has emerged between Muslim community of Katakwi district and the authorities of Katakwi town council over the cemetery land.
The land in contention is located along Soroti- Moroto Road opposite Katakwi Town council and its approximately 0.169 hectare.
Abdu Razak Hassan Koluo, a district councilor representing Katakwi Muslims in Teso District Muslim council also doubling as one of the Directors for Teso Religious Leaders Efforts for Peace and Reconciliation (TERELEPAR) says town council has grab part of their land which was gazetted in 1997.
He says the contested land (cemetery) has a grave graveyard of 112 Muslims.
Omar Sheikh Olinga, the District Kahdi Katakwi says all along the Muslims have been in the cemetery and no one had claimed the ownership until compensation of Soroti – Moroto Road.
Olinga accuses the authorities of Katakwi town council for trying to grab the commentary land yet they have leasehold over contested land.
He says they are hoping to sue Katakwi town council in courts of law over grabbing their Land.
But Joseph Okure Okot the Town Clerk Katakwi told us that the disputed land is clearly land for public burial.
He says the Muslim are only their neighbors who even aided them getting their compensation by signing their documents as procurements during the compensation of Soroti –Moroto Road tarmac where UNRA paid town council about 13 million shillings.
He said the contested Land is divided a half for Muslims and half belongs to town council authority.
The RDC Katakwi Rtd. Maj Godfrey Katamba says the land in contention is under investigations and a general enquiry file has been opened at Katakwi Central Police Station.
