Katakwi district security authorities have said that at least 120 heads of cattle have been lost in Katakwi in the last four months.
The Katakwi District Resident District commissioner RDC Katakwi Rtd Maj Godfrey Katamba said that since January to April 2023 over 120 cattle have been stolen by Karamojong but an average of 80 cattle have never been recovered.
Katamba said that at least an average of 30 cows have been stolen in the district monthly.
He noted that the cattle lost are always taken to the areas of Nabilatuk where the rustlers use the lower areas of Nabwale hills to escape with the cattle.
Katamba says there is need for heavy deployment of security in the district amidst intensified cattle raids by the armed Karamojong
The most affected Borderline sub counties hit by these cattle raids are the sub counties of Ngariam, Palam and Magoro.
Moses Iteit, the LC3 chairperson Ngariam Sub County also revealed that from January to April, 69 cattle were raided in his sub county but only 36 were recovered.
