District Council speakers from Teso Sub Region have petitioned the office of the Minister for Teso Affairs to over the poor state of schools and health Centre’s in the region.
The Speakers now want the Minister to provide iron sheets to several schools and health centres’ in Teso in order to better the level of service delivery and education standards.
While meeting Minister Ongalo at the Teso affairs Ministry headquarters in Soroti on Thursday, the speakers said several schools and health Centre’s are dilapidated and need to be rehabilitated.
Headed by Joseph Gilbert Omugit the speakers are calling for immediate intervention by the ministry noting that pupils in government aided schools have been forced to study under trees.
They noted that due to inadequate shelter for staff there has been a high rate absenteeism not only in the education sector but also in the health sector.
They also appealed to minister to set up an annual special grant under his affirmative action ministry to aid in rehabilitation of schools.
The also cited a challenge of water crisis that they said have hit several sub counties in the region.
Others challenges include; need to motivate special interests groups, capacity building for councilor’s, support to speakers SACCO, capacity building for speakers on their roles and tractors among others.
But the Minister for Teso Affairs Kenneth Ongalo Obote asked teso leaders to work together in order to have the ministry empowered to serve the people of Teso.
He also asked them to empower councilors to carry out their oversight roles.
He challenged them to be patient has his office will handle some issues under phased manner.
