The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party elders from eleven (11) districts of Teso Sub-region have asked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to fulfill his 2019 pledges he made to them.
The elders made the remarks while meeting with Teso Affairs Minister Kenneth Ongalo Obote in Timisha Hotel in Soroti City on Wednesday.
Key among the pledges highlighted by the elders include Uganda shillings 50 million to elders SACCO, motorcycles for elders per district, 32 seater mini-bus and one on one audience with the President.
They also want the President to at least construct a golden palace for the elderly which will house the geriatric hospital, cottages and gym services.
The sub-region comprises the districts of Pallisa, Kumi, Bukedea, Ngora, Katakwi, Amuria, Kalaki, Kapelebyong, Kaberemaido, Soroti and Serere.
The elders, in their joint memo read by elder Okiria Aloka Alfred, the chairperson elderly for Amuria district, asked President Museveni to fulfill his pledges made to the elderly in the region noting that the elders have been abandoned by the youths.
The elders also cited challenges in the ongoing cattle compensation while asking the President to intervene into the matter.
Okiria also called on the President to support them in the move to mitigate climate change, noting that they have identified tree planting as the key factor in mitigating climate change.
Meanwhile Hon. Kenneth Ongalo Obote, the Teso Affairs Minister told the elders to be the light of the region.
He called on the elders to support government programs aimed at mitigating climate change. He also pledged to deliver the elders’ reminder to the President.
He added that the government of Uganda values the elders and believes the elders’ cry will be handled.
