A total of five (05) candidates have been fully nominated to run for the vacant Serere County seat, the Electoral Commission (EC) has said.
The EC on Friday February 10, 2023 concluded nominations of candidates who are vying to fill the void that was left by Late Patrick Okabe.
The EC’s Serere district returning officer Sylvia Cheptegei said that out of the seven candidates who picked nomination forms, only five fulfilled all the requirements.
The five candidates nominated to contest for the seat of Directly-elected Member of Parliament include; Emmanuel Omoding Independent, Emmanuel Eratu FDC, Martin Ongurucho Independent, Alice Alaso Asianut ANT and Philip Oucor NRM.
Others who picked interest and didn’t turn-up included Gilibert Etomet JEEMA and Obore Joel NUP.
According to the EC program, the five candidates will have 9 days to campaign and rally support across Serere from Monday, February 13, to Tuesday February 21, 2023.
The by-elections will then be held on February 23, 2023.
Emmanuel Eratu the FDC candidate who was the last candidate to be nominated called on Electoral Commission to conduct peaceful and fair elections.
He said that, the decision to be taken by EC officials will either affect the people of Serere positively or negatively.
He also called on the security officials to avoid intimidating voters and also asked the NRM Party to desist from using the state machinery to intimidate the locals in Serere.
Martin Ongurucho Independent also called for peaceful polls.
