The Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Speaker Parliament of Uganda, Members of Parliament and the leadership of the ruling National Resistance Movement – NRM party have unanimously agreed to rally behind the elder son of the departed Serere County MP Patrick Okabe.
The motion to front Emmanuel Omoding the elder son of Hon. Okabe was moved by the Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa who had asked the family to appoint a family member to replace thier late father amidst cheers from mourners.
Okupa said that the MPs were ready support any person the family was going to present.
His motion was subsquently supported by Teso Parliamentary Group – TPG Bosco Okiror (Usuk County) who said that Hon. Okabe was Unifying factor in TPG and as Teso Leaders they have a duty to support the family of MP Patrick Okabe.
“I pray that the people of Serere spare my time to come here to campaign for Omoding yet the body of our brother is still fresh,” Minister Kenneth Ongalo said.
He asked the voters and other candidates to spare the seat for the family’s chosen replacement.
Musa Francis Ecweru the State Minister for works and Peter Ogwang State Minister for Sports on their part said they were ready to light Hon Okabe’s candles through his son.
The Minister for Fisheries Hellen Adoa in her speech called on voters not to look desperate and leave an orphanged life but said Okabe produced Children that she is hopefull will support the projects their father started.
The Vice Chairperson on NRM Eastern Uganda Capt Mike Mukula also said that, “as the NRM party they have listened to the people’s wish and noted that they will seat with the NRM Flag bearer who became second in the last polls Philip Oucor back off from the polls.
He called on other political party’s not to front any candidate.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa who represented the Speaker said that, “as a house (Parliament) they will support the family in secruing the victory.”
Tayebwa said Hon. Okabe has left when his interest to end povety was still at tender age.
In his acceptance speech Emmanuel Omoding who the family fronted said once elected, he will make sure that what his father started shall be completed.
He said, “I shall have all what our father started fullifilled and His dreams shall come to pass. I want to see that people of Serere have a better life. If it means to build hospitals, schools, and what makes you (voters) happy, i will do that. All what my father has been doing, i have been observing and Serere shall rise up and Teso at all.
Daniel Okabe one of Hon. Okabe’s other sons also said that he will support his brother to make sure what their Father and Mama started shall not perish.
But, Philip Oucor refused to acknowledge that he was not going to contest amongst the voters saying its not time for campaigns.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his message delivered by the Vice President Jessica Alupo encourgaed the family of late Okabe to keep the legacy of their late parents.
He said Okabe was a devouted leaders who served his country with diginity.
Both MP Okabe and his wife Christine persihed in a a car accident on Monday 19, December 2022.
