The retired Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese Rt. Rev. Erasmus Desiderius Wandera has died at age of 92 years, the Catholic Church has confirmed.
In a statement released through the Uganda Episcopal Conference website, the church was saddened to announce the passing of the first Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese.
Bishop Wandera served as Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese from 1980 until 2007 when he retired.
“On this Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Blessed Virgin Mary, we have just received the sad news of the death of Rt. Rev. Erasmus Desiderius Wandera, Bishop Emeritus of Soroti. He passed on this morning at 6:00 a.m. at his residence in Mbale. Further details regarding his funeral will be communicated later. May his soul rest in eternal peace!,” the statement read.
Who was Rt. Rev. Wandera
Erasmus Desiderius Wandera was born 16 April 1930 in Dabani, in present-day Busia District, in the Eastern Uganda. On 27 December 1956, he was ordained a priest where he served as priest until 29 November 1980.
As bishop
Wandera was appointed Bishop of Soroti on 29 November 1980 and was consecrated a bishop on 29 March 1981, at Immaculate Conception, Cathedral, Soroti, Diocese by Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga, Archbishop of Kampala, assisted by Bishop James Odongo, Bishop of Tororo, and Archbishop Henri Lemaître†, Titular Archbishop of Tongres. He served as bishop until 2007.
On 27 Jun 2007 Bishop Erasmus Desiderius Wandera retired and was succeeded by His Grace Emmanuel Obbo the now Archbishop of Tororo Archdiocese.
