The Serere County Legislator Patrick Okabe has listed a total of five key points that he believes will help in attaining a fossil free Future.
Okabe was recently elected as focal point person for Uganda and Coordinator for East and South Africa for fossil free future nations
According to Okabe as elected leaders serving millions of people in various countries in Africa, they are inspired by the global Fossil Free movement to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of renewable energy for all.
“The fossil fuel era must end. We need an urgent and just transformation to a fossil free world. We cannot keep using last century’s fossil fuels to power our life. It’s time to empower our communities with clean, renewable energy derived from the sun, earth, wind and water,” he said.
“It must be made clear that this is a process, which will take time. But we must begin now thinking about a fossil free Future and nations need to prepare for this shift,” he noted.
MP Okabe’s five points
- Direct fuel subsidies to renewable energy
- Compensate vulnerable nations so they can embark on renewable energy. Vulnerable nations are under a heavy debt burden. There has to be debt swap to enable poor nations develop their countries
- Financing for science and Technology innovation is important so countries can begin to transition into renewable energy
- Developing countries with fossil Fuel projects should direct revenue from fuel to renewable energy
- Finally cooperation and negotiation with oil producing countries is necessary.
