Bukedea District authorities have imposed animal quarantine in the district to avert the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD).
The quarantine has been imposed in the sub counties of Kamutur and Aminit.
The district has banned movement of livestock and livestock products with immediate effect.
Aloysius Bukenya, the acting District Veterinary Officer told media that the ban of cattle movement in the two sub counties was to avoid rapid spread of the virus in the district.
James Peter Adok, LCIII Aminit Sub county says over 1000 cows have contracted the disease while adding that so far a total of five cattle have died in his area within three weeks.
Meanwhile cattle traders have resorted to using non quarantined sub counties to connect to weekly markets TNN has learnt.
So far a total of two Teso districts have reported the presence of Foot and Mouth Disease including Bukedea and Katakwi.
Recently, while addressing a gathering in Katakwi, Vice President of Uganda Jessica Alupo asked the districts affected by the disease to write to the Ministry of Agriculture so that proper action is taken.
