The Serere County Legislator Patrick Okabe has said that forming and joining village savings groups is Uganda’s only last nail in eliminating Poverty.
While meeting various village savings groups leaders in Serere County on Saturday Mr. Okabe said whereas community empowerment has been done through many other ways, the only biggest nail is economic empowerment through village savings.
Okabe who recently launched his 157 village savings groups noted that his idea of introducing savings groups will ensure thay all members of society are empowered economically to ensure they enter the money economy.
He urged members of the public, including women to join saccos at village level through which they will be assisted by through his Okabe Foundation and various government through the Parish Development Model.
He further called on men to empower their women in terms of finance where women can sustain themselves financially.
He also called upon all leaders at all levels to embrace, support and mobilise the population to take advantage of the savings groups and various government programs to supplement their households income.
Lastly, Okabe further tasked the people of Serere to adopt commercial farming if they are to fight poverty.
He notes that Ugandans should not only get involved in subsistence farming but rather embrace commercial agriculture that will see them produce both for their subsistence and for sale.
“This year I am focusing on Savings next year we shall change out thinking to commercial farming. Our people must join commercial farming instead of subsistence farming,” he said.
