Five victims of the Awoja accident which involved cattle traders along the Soroti- Mbale road on Wednesday night have been buried.
The victims are part of the 18 cattle traders who were aboard the truck when the tragedy occurred.
They were travelling from Kotido district to Kibuku, Butebo and Budaka when their truck veered off the road and entered in Awoja River.
Their remains had been taken to Ngora Fred Carr Hospital Mortuary, while the injured were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, Kumi Orthopedics and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for emergency care.
The deceased were identified as Moses Kirya 18, Richard Tabiruka, 27, John Bosco Kutu, 25, Paul Itakali, 20, and Ibra Waguma, 25 years, all from Kibuku district.
SP Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police spokesman says that all the other survivors admitted at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital have been referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital while others have been discharged.
Ageca said that out of the eight traders who sustained injuries during the accident, three people had minor injuries while five were critical.
The five admitted at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital are; Kareem Ndoboli, 28, Ahmad Mugalya, 55, Sharif Isabirye, 20, Paul Itakali, 38, and Choli Badir, 48 years.
The Police attribute the accident to reckless driving and overspeeding by the driver whose identity has not yet been established.
