At least six market traders have been confirmed dead following a motor accident that happened along Vurra -Anguru -Arivu mission road in Arua district.
The accident involving a Fuso-Canter registration number UBG 732L occurred on Friday evening when the truck which was transporting traders and their merchandise to the weekly Okubani Market in Madi-Okollo district overturned near Anguru Community Primary School.
The incident comes at a time after nearly 12 traders lost their lives in separate accidents in Awoja 5 and Kampala 7.
Although the identities of the deceased traders have not yet been identified, all those who have been confirmed dead are women traders from Logiri Sub-county in Arua District.
More than 15 others are admitted at Kuluva Hospital and Arua Regional Referral Hospital.
John Bosco Odama, the Logiri Sub-county chairperson has described the incident as unfortunate but appealed for calm from the relatives of the deceased.
He says the majority of the women traders who lost their lives are from Lazebu Parish.
Juma Asiku, who was at the scene told Uganda Radio Network-URN that four people died on the spot, while two others died at Kuluva Hospital.
The West Nile region Police Spokesperson, Josephine Angucia confirmed the accident noting that Police are making further inquiries to establish the cause of the accident.
“Our officers have visited the scene and investigations have commenced to find out the cause of the accident,” said Angucia.
Preliminary investigations have attributed the cause of the accident to overloading and a mechanical fault with the vehicle.
