The Serere County Legislator Patrick Okabe has threatened to lead a number of affected Kyere residents to petition President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Parliament of Uganda over the recent Kyere Ginnery saga.
The clash between police and the locals erupted after they suspected that TCU management wanted to allegedly takeaway mercury that they claim is inside the ginnery.
15 people got injured during the clashes with property worth millions destroyed.
In a statement released on Friday October 28, 2022, Mr. Okabe who is disappointed with the press release by Teso Cooperative Union said that he was not impressed by the arrogant response by TCU.
“I have read the press release by TCU and do appreciate them coming out to inform the public. As representative of the people of Serere County and Kyere in particular, I am not impressed by the arrogant response by TCU,” Okabe said in a statement.

He said that, “It would have been better for TCU to first and foremost offer apology and sympathy to the injured people of Kyere. A P7 candidate was shot and is lying in a hospital bed at Kumi Orthopedic Hospital and he might miss PLE exams.”
He noted that, as leaders of Serere they have started the process of healing and reconciliation between TCU and Kyere residents and advised that, TCU to use a reconciliatory.”
“TCU should come to the ground and have a peaceful meeting with the people. Apologize, sympathize and seek harmony with the community. It is important for TCU to know that no project or programme can succeed when the community is not friendly. TCU cannot work in Isolation.”
Okabe also questioned TCU’s motive of renovating the ginnery.

“Why start renovation with Kyere first? Why not Bugondo ginnery, Arapai ginnery etc? What is special with kyere? Why Did TCU have to cut the roof of the ginnery to access it? Why not go through the door. Also why begin renovation by digging where the treasure box is located?” he questioned.
“Please take note that there are injured people and no one has a right to point a gun and release live bullets on Ugandans. The leg of PLE candidate was shattered by a live bullet. We will help all the injured pursue the matter and receive justice. Our people will petition the President and Parliament to be heard. They can’t be intimidated and suppressed,” he added.
