The authorities in Bukedea district have registered a total of 18 teenage mothers who are currently sitting for the Uganda Certificate of Education- UCE examinations.
The young mothers are registered and sitting for their examinations in Bukedea Secondary School, Kolir Comprehensive and St. Theresa Secondary School among other schools in Bukedea district.
Nine of the young mothers are due for delivery and the others are already breastfeeding.
They are among the 1,956 candidates sitting for UCE in Bukedea district this year.
Stephen Okurut, the acting District Education Officer says the girls could have conceived while at school or during holidays this year.
Bukedea district also registered 17 absentees in the ongoing UCE examinations.
Among the absentees are seven girls and 10 boys from Kidongole Seed School, Kongunga High School, Malera- Kabarwa Secondary School, St. John’s College- Kachumbala, Malera Secondary School and St. Theresa- Okunguro Secondary School.
Okurut says that two male students reportedly joined the armed forces in the recent recruitment.
The UCE examination started on October 14, 2022 with the briefing of candidates across the country and will end on November 18, 2022.
