Police in the East Kyoga region have started investigations into the scuffle that arose between the Teso Cooperative Union Management and the community of Kyere Sub County in Serere district over the alleged Kyere ginnery mercury theft.
The police on October 15, 2022 engaged in running battles with the locals who wanted to beat up the Teso Cooperative Union leaders headed by Kasilo County Mp Elijah Okupa.
They had alleged that MP Okupa wanted to take away the mercury in the ginnery.
During the scuffle at least 15 people were left nursing injuries while property worth millions was lost.
SP Oscar Gregg Agecca the Police Spokesperson East Kyoga while addressing the media at his office on Tuesday October 25, 2022 said that police has started investigation into the matter.
He said that they have instituted the inquiry into the matter in order to verify the claims.
Last week on Friday while meeting with the area, MPs Patrick Okabe and Minister Hellen Adoa resident demanded that the Teso Cooperative Union leadership and Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa compensates them for the body injuries and properties lost during last Saturday’s violence.
John Esadu, the LCIII Kyere Sub County who spoke on behalf of the residents said that the Teso Cooperative union leadership and Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa need to compensate the affected people for peace and harmony to prevail.
Patrick Okabe the area MP Serere County then challenged police to investigate the incident.
Okabe also requested the affected persons to open up cases against the management of TCU.
On her part, Hellen Adoa the Minister for Fisheries assured the community that the issue would behandled in two weeks
