SOROTI – The aging science teachers whose salaries were recently enhanced from about UGX 1m to a maximum of UGX 4M are desperately working around the clock to lower their ages to avoid mandatory retirement.
The government announced that effective July 2022 salaries of all science teachers will be raised from minimum of UGX 796,000 for diploma holders to maximum of UGX 3m.
However salaries of graduates will be raised from UGX 1.1m to maximum of UGX 4m.
This has not gone down well with those bound to clock retirement age in a short time the National Identification & Registration Authority has revealed.
Samuel Odongo, the Registration Officer at National Identification & Registration Authority (NIRA) Soroti-Karamoja region has revealed that most teachers have run to NIRA seeking assistance to lower their ages in order to avoid retirement quickly.
Odongo told our reporter today that his office receives between two to five science teachers daily seeking assistance to lower their ages so as to avoid mandatory retirement quickly.
James Oede, the Soroti district education officer has called upon the affected teachers to come to terms with the situation and accept to retire honorably according to public service retirement standard orders.
Oede noted that this kind of behavior depicts the character of persons who did not prepare for their retirement time early.
